Is your website user-friendly? When your directory profiles, Adwords and social media posts get potential clients to your homepage, are they turned on, or turned off by what they see?
Here’s a super quick, 10-point, user-friendliness evaluation you can perform yourself.
1. Is the name or type of the business at the top of the page and immediately clear ?
2. Is the main benefit to be gained from the business unmistakenly obvious at a glance?
3. Does the homepage speak to a specific kind of client about their immediate problem?
4. Does the page make a personal connection with questions?
5. Is the main message quickly grasped with bullet points and short paragraphs?
6. Are design and color scheme supportive of the message or distracting to the eye?
7. Are visitors shown clear, easy, next step directions, links and buttons?
8. Does the page offer anything of take-away value?
9. Will the menu help visitors easily find what they want to know?
10. Does it feel good to visit / give a sense of hope to the visitor?
When you’ve taken this evaluation on your own website, I recommend asking a friend who is not in your profession to evaluate your site as well.
We all have a certain myopia when it comes to believing that we’ve written clear content that in reality is full of jargon, assumptions, and confusing or demotivating thoughts that won’t connect with clients. Someone outside the profession can be helpful in spotting those pitfalls for you.
If you find that your website, and your homepage especially, aren’t up to snuff on these 10 points, it’s time to update your site.
And if you are in process with building your website – lucky you. Take the user-friendly eval now to save yourself the frustration of launching a site that gets a poor response.
Need an experienced critique of your site and a written report of what to prioritize in fixing it and how to do that most cost-effectively? I’d love to do that for you? See what that entails here.
